Peter Lai, a legendary lyricist in Hong Kong, stands as one of the true pioneers who helped shape the landscape of Cantopop. In the mid-1970s, his prolific collaboration with the "God of Songs," Sam Hui, forged one of the most iconic partnerships in the history of Hong Kong popular music. Together, they crafted countless classics—such as "Voice of a Wanderer" (浪子心声), "Dimple and Smile" (梨涡浅笑), "The God of Wealth Arrives" (财神到), "Life is Like a Chess Game" (世事如棋), "The Student" (学生哥), "The Price Hike Craze" (加价热潮), and "Tsim Sha Tsui Susie"—creating a shared cultural memory that fans still cherish today. These songs not only captured the struggles and dreams of ordinary people but also infused a street-smart, satirical wit regarding contemporary social issues. The track "Raising a Glass to Song" (杯酒当歌) serves as a poignant reflection of Lai’s own life philosophy. Furthermore, Peter Lai played a pivotal role in reaching the zeniths of the musical careers of Leslie Cheung and Anita Mui, penning enduring hits such as "Monica," "The First Time" (第一次), "Heart and Soul" (心肝宝贝), and "Splitting the Iceberg" (将冰山劈开). Even today, "A Wild Goose on the Horizon" (天边一只雁)—a song he wrote for Alan Tam—remains a staple in the veteran star’s concert repertoire. This concert serves as a tribute to Peter Lai, featuring a lineup of original performers and younger-generation artists who will honor him through both sincere and characteristically playful (or "witty/mischievous") interpretations. The event celebrates his monumental achievements in the music industry and the enduring, ever-evolving influence of his body of work. Musical director Andrew Tuason will breathe new life into a selection of Lai’s vast catalog—including Agnes Chan’s "May You Remain Intoxicated" (愿你继续醉), Wan Kwong’s "Shaky Legs" (脚震震), Pang Kin-sun’s "Blowing the Little Trumpet" (吹吹小喇叭), and Candice Yu’s "Freedom in My Hands" (自由在我手). A talented roster of vocalists—including Vivian Lai, JW (Joey Wong), Vic Teo, Ngan Mai-ko, and Fred Cheng—will perform a variety of classics and hidden gems from different stages of Lai’s career, such as "Why Not Give It a Try" (我何妨一试), "The Road of Love" (爱路), and "Breaking Up" (分手), revealing a side of Lai that goes beyond his signature "witty" style to showcase his profound emotional depth. Additionally, the hip-hop duo FAMA will share personal, memorable anecdotes from their time spent with Peter Lai. For this event, we have the special honor of welcoming renowned Chinese opera artist Yuen Siu-fai, who will share stories from Peter Lai’s childhood in the world of traditional opera—and perhaps even grace us with a song. The program also features a cross-disciplinary video presentation by dancer and soloist Mui Cheuk-yin, interpreting Lai’s works. Furthermore, with Peter Lai’s close friends Danny Summer and "Big AL" (Tai AL) leading the way—joined by young harmonica virtuoso Yeung Chun-yin, cellist Wong Ka-lap, and others—this promises to be an unforgettable musical feast.
